4 PARTS OF VERBS

  • INFINITIVE – the title of the verb — always has “to” in front of it

* SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE – happening right now or happens continually

* SIMPLE PAST TENSE – happened in the past

* PAST PARTICIPLE – past form that goes with a helping verb

EXAMPLES:
INFINITIVE to seem to shout to run to think to drive to be
SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE seem, seems shout, shouts run, runs think, thinks drive, drives am, is, are
SIMPLE PAST TENSE seemed shouted ran thought drove was, were
PAST PARTICIPLE seemed shouted run thought driven been

USING THE 4 PARTS

In each sentence below, you have been given the infinitive of each verb. Write the appropriate verb form in the blank. (__No infinitives__, please.)

Here’s where HELPING VERBS come into play:

If there is no helping verb, use the SIMPLE PAST TENSE.

If there is a helping verb, use the PAST PARTICIPAL.

Example: rang Did you say the telephone (to ring) while I was in the shower?
