A preposition is a word that tells you 'anywhere a mouse can run.'
It NEVER travels alone; it is always followed by a noun or a pronoun.
| Use the test sentence: | A mouse can run | _________________________. |
| | A mouse can run | under the chair. |
| | A mouse can run | through the house. |
| | A mouse can run | past Aunt Judy. |
| | A mouse can run | over him. |
| | A mouse can run | before lunch. |
One preposition does not fit the mouse sentence: OF. Memorize it.
Prepositional phrases add detail and description to your writing. When you analyze a sentence, draw a line through prepositional phrases so that you can see the rest of the sentence clearly.
